Indiana Caverns and StarGeezer Astronomy present “Stars, Stalactites & Meteors” an evening of adventure, exploration and discovery, Saturday, October 21st.
Visit the Ice Age and view one of the largest collections of Ice Age bones in North America, the grandeur of Big Bone Mountain, beautiful cave formations and boat ride 110 feet below the surface. Then blast off for a cosmic adventure with amazing telescopic views of the Sun, Moon, planet Saturn, the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxy.
The “Stars, Stalactites & Meteors” program will begin at 5 pm with viewing of the Sun through a specially filtered telescope and binoculars followed by a 90 minute excursion and boat tour through magnificent Indiana Caverns.
Guests will then be treated to a media presentation “What’s Up with the StarGeezer” featuring highlights of the recent “Great American Solar Eclipse”, including the “Eclipse Megamovie”, highlights and images from the Cassini mission at Saturn plus a retrospective of the 60th anniversary of the “Space Age” and launch of Sputnik on October 4, 1957.
This audience interactive presentation will preview the evening’s stargazing program and quizzes where you could win tickets to Rauch Planetarium and other astronomy related items.
At dusk activities will move outdoors for views of the Moon, Saturn and the Andromeda galaxy with a giant telescope and constellation tours of the stars of early Fall.
The Orionid meteor shower will peak on the night of October 21/22. The Orionids are debris from Comet Halley and produce up to 20 fast, dim meteors per hour. Meteor activity will peak after midnight.
“StarGeezer” Mark Steven Williams will host your adventure, tour and stargazing activities. Mark is also an interpretive guide at Indiana Caverns.
Come early and stay late to observe the Orionid meteors, bring a light jacket and patio lounge chair since the meteor activity will peak after midnight.
Guests will receive a free Sky Map star map, and an observing guide for the evening stargazing activities.
