I will be hosting a SOLAR ECLIPSE PREVIEW and STAR PARTY TELESCOPE OBSERVING SESSION Saturday, June 3rd at Kenlake State Resort Park at Land Between the Lakes in western Kentucky.
Our program will begin at 6pm CDT with a presentation detailing the local circumstances of the “Great American Eclipse” at Marshall county and Kenlake resort park, explain how to safely view the Sun and experience the majesty of a total solar eclipse with a program beginning at 6pm CDT. The program will start outdoors with a demonstration of simple observing tools including a pinhole camera and a specially outfitted telescope called a “Sun Funnel”.
Activities will then move indoors for a PowerPoint presentation that will cover the eclipse, “What’s Up” coming celestial highlights, the June 21st Summer Solstice and the evening’s stargazing program.
The interactive, family friendly program will include astronomy quizzes, prize giveaways including “Eclipse Shades” safe solar viewers and free Sky Maps for June 2017 while supplies last.
As dusk falls around 8:45 pm the evening’s outdoor stargazing party will begin with constellation tours and telescope views of the waxing Moon, Jupiter and selected “deep sky objects”.
The waxing gibbous Moon will appear very near planet Jupiter that evening and we’ll see two of Jupiter’s moons, Io and Ganymede, transiting or crossing Jupiter in our telescopes between approximately 10 pm and midnight.
Other activities at Kenlake include fishing, boating, tennis, archery and camping. Rooms at Kenlake Lodge and family cottages are available. Enjoy a delicious meal and relaxing view of Kentucky lake at the Aurora Landing Restaurant. Bring the family and spend the weekend with us!
Warning: never look at the Sun without proper solar filters. Severe eye damage will result with a short glimpse.
